Preparation Relocation

Tuesday July 9th, 2019

Jessica Meuninck-Ganger and Chris Flynn continued to pack up the shop as I mostly wandered around thinking about the people who have graced Anchor over the years with their presence. Anchor Graphics hosted 100's of exhibits, published 60 or so artists,  provided free printmaking classes to young people in the community, provided learning opportunities for interns,and an environment conducive for creative risk-taking for our resident artists.

On the way to Chicago, Jessica and I talked about the mission of CCR,  and acknowledged that its roots are firmly planted in the history of Anchor Graphics. But the cultural landscape of the 1990's has changed. It is our responsibility to provide a space that continues to welcome research and community collaboration, where prints can be utilized as tools for social engagement and  building awareness of global issues--all the while being a place where beautiful and meaningful works of art are created.

Milwaukee where it will eventually grace the Center for Collaborative Research.

The new space has yet to be found, so until it reveals itself we will be storing the equipment for a short time.  Thursday July 11th we will be loading up the Presses, and Misc equipment.

Preparation for Change

Yesterday we started packing up the former Anchor Graphics to prepare for its relaunch in Milwaukee.  A continuation of a story that continues to unfold. Some years back Anchor Graphics became a program under the umbrella of the Columbia College Chicago Department of Art & Design.  Columbia College Chicago is loaning us the equipment that made up the core of the Anchor Graphics shop.  In the next few weeks, we will be loading and packing and moving the presses, tables, and rollers to temporary storage in Milwaukee.  Columbia College retains the name Anchor Graphics, plus the Anchor Graphics Archives are housed at the College. The Center for Collaborative Research, which will open as a Milwaukee-based shop, will continue the work that Anchor Graphics began in 1990.

Relief Printing at the Kenosha Civil War Museum

On June 8th CCR  was invited to set up our POW for the Kenosha Civil War Museum Grand Review.

We demonstrated the relief printing process and gave away over 100 prints. 

POW at Our Lady of Grace Academy

On June  4th  CCR was invited to bring it's POW to the 2nd Annual Steamroller Event at Our Lady Of Grace Academy.   Grace Academy students cut blocks in preparation for the event, under  Professor Amy Misurelli-Sorensen's guidance.    We would like to thank Speedball Ink, Gamblin Ink, Takach press, for donating supplies to this event.

SGC International MembersTraveling Exhibition

The SGC International Members Traveling Exhibition is coming to an end, getting packed up and shipped on to Cape Girardeau.  Thanks to the artists who have shared their work with the community, To the Kenosha Community Foundation, the Arts Fund and the many individuals who donated to CCR to make this exhibition possible. We hope you enjoyed it.

Thanks to the Kenosha Creative Space for hosting the exhibition and SGC International for organizing and curating the Members Exhibition. It was an amazing show.

In the coming weeks, I will be posting images of some of my favorite pieces from the exhibition.

SGC International-2019-members-traveling-exhibition

The SGC International 2019 Members Traveling  Exhibition was made possible in part through grants and funding from The Kenosha Community Foundation, The Arts Fund, In-kind donations from The Center for Collaborative Research, The Kenosha Creative Space and contributions from individuals.

The Center for Collaborative Research is a Non-Profit Organization that Promotes Prints and printmaking through it's Press on Wheels  Print outreach program, workshops and classes.

The Center for Collaborative Research presents the SGC International Members Traveling Exhibit at the Kenosha Creative Space

SGC International is an educational non-profit organization committed to informing our membership about issues and processes concerning original prints, drawings, book arts, and handmade paper.

This exhibit is juried from submissions by active members of the organization. the exhibit features 50+ works from North American and international artists. It celebrates the diversity and vibrancy of printmaking while engaging a broad range of contemporary themes and processes.

This exhibition has been made possible through grants and donations from the Kenosha Community Foundation, the Center for Collaborative Research and The Kenosha Creative Space and the Arts Fund.

A couple of days ago CCR conducted its first POW (Press On Wheels) of the season at the Boys & Girls Club of Kenosha. 

The little kids made monoprints, and for some, it was their first experience making prints.  We are planning additional print activities throughout the summer.   Thanks to the Kenosha Community Foundation for funding this activity.  We would also like to thank Julia Schiller for working with us and helping the young budding artists make their first prints...

First POW of the Season

Loaded up the Truck for our first work session at the Boys & Girls Club.  Just had serious front end work done on the truck. Ready for the season.   BUT,  the lift gate for the press didn't work, so the workshop was canceled. Tomorrow I take the truck to get the gate fixed.

Gearing up for Spring

We survived the Polar Vortex - Shoveled snow and kept warm.  It's time to get back to work.  Our trusty POW vehicle  made it through the winter - the other day I started it right up. no jumper fingers, no crossed fingers.

Our first Spring adventure  in the next few weeks will be to take our POW over to the Kenosha Boys and Girls Club. we will  set up the  press and will make prints with the kids.

The Civil War Museum Kenosha WI

On Dec 1st  CCR setup it's Press on Wheels  at Civil War Museum  in Kenosha WI,  We printed  pretty much non stop from 11AM until 4:30 PM.  We printed  over 100 Seasons greetings cards.

Anyone who  was interested in operating the press received a freshly printed card.  

What is really gratifying though is to watch the reaction of someone witnessing an impression being pulled from an inked block for the very first time.

 Or vision is to expand the capability to provide print and paper making activities to young people, seniors, veterans etc, regardless of ability to pay. We have always believed that it is more important to create opportunities for people to experience new things. Ability to pay should never be a roadblock to participation.

Makers Faire Milwaukee

Last week we were invited by the PRINT CLUB of the University of  Wisconsin Milwaukee to set up our POW next to their Steamroller Printmaking event. It was scheduled as a two-day event.

We loaded up our etching press, and our paper press and drier system. Our POWvehicle lumbered up to Milwaukee from our base in Kenosha, making it our longest trip to date. November we'll drive it to Madison for two weekends for a papermaking event with veterans. More to come on that.

Watching young people respond to prints and printmaking is always a joy.

CCR had their relief and paper maker station and the UWM PNF students had their steamroller large scale print and block printing station set up and we printed up a storm. 

We printed so much, that it did in fact storm, which meant the next day we would set up our printmaking tents indoors, sans steamroller and papermaking activities.

POW @ the Boys and Girls Club in Kenosha

On June 28th CCR's Press On Wheels made a stop at the Boys and Girls Club of Kenosha where we conducted a drypoint workshop for  10 to 20 kids.  It was an exciting event with the kids getting inky and others wanting in on the opportunity to learn and experience printmaking.

Thanks to the enthusiastic support of artist Julia Schiller for facilitating this workshop.
